A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to perform memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally cultivate the local populace. Yeonsanhyanggyo was first built in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo of Joseon, and has since been repaired on several occasions to take on its present form. The buildings that survive today include, for the memorial rites, Daeseongjeon Hall together with Dongmu and Seomu, and, for education, the lecture hall Myeongnyundang and the dormitories Dongjae and Seojae, where students once lived. The entrance gates also remain, including the red-spiked Hongsalmun and the inner and outer three-bay gates. Inside Daeseongjeon Hall are enshrined the spirit tablets of the Five Sages, centred on Confucius and including Yan Hui, Zengzi, Zisi and Mencius, while Dongmu and Seomu enshrine the spirit tablets of sages from China and Korea. In the Joseon period the school received land, enslaved labourers and books from the state to support the education of its students, but today its educational function has ceased and only the memorial rites continue.
