Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site was discovered during construction of the Gagyeong District 4 residential development and a bypass road in Cheongju, and was excavated by Chungbuk National University Museum in 1995. A large number of features were confirmed here, ranging from Bronze Age dwelling remains to features spanning the Three Kingdoms to Joseon periods. In particular, in part of the hill area between Honggol and Gamnamusil in Gagyeong-dong, Baekje wooden-chamber tombs (mokgwakmyo) and wooden-coffin tombs (mokgwanmyo) of a type not previously seen were investigated, and it was confirmed that dwelling remains and burial remains were laid out in fixed zones close to one another. In particular, various Baekje-period features were identified, including three dwelling sites, seven storage pits, thirteen earthen-pit tombs (togwangmyo), and a Baekje pottery kiln preserved in complete form. A wide range of earthenware and ironware was unearthed, identifying the site as contemporary with the Sinbong-dong Tomb Cluster in Cheongju. The Gagyeong-dong area of Cheongju was a region of vigorous cultural activity during the Bronze Age and Baekje period, and the site is regarded as important for clarifying the Baekje-period culture of the Cheongju region in connection with the Sinbong-dong Tomb Cluster (a historic site) and the Bongmyeong and Songjeol-dong sites. It is an area with a dense distribution of Baekje earthen-pit tombs, showing no trace of looting, and the remains have been well preserved in their original state, giving it high academic value.
