Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and edify the local populace. Eunjinhyanggyo was built in 1380, the sixth year of King U of Goryeo, and was relocated to its present site in 1615, the seventh year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, undergoing several repairs since then down to today. The buildings of the hyanggyo include the Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, the Dongjae and Seojae (east and west study halls), and the inner and outer three-bay gates. The Daeseongjeon Hall is a building three bays wide and two bays deep, its roof a matbae (gabled) roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). Inside it enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius together with nine sages of China and eighteen sages of Korea. Memorial rites are held here every year in spring and autumn, in the second and eighth months of the lunar calendar.
