Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone-built fortress on the coast of Ijin-ri, Bukpyeong-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do. A military garrison was set up here in 1588, the 21st year of King Seonjo, and it was raised to the status of a manhojin (a garrison commanded by a manho, a military officer of the fourth rank) in 1627, the fifth year of King Injo; the fortress is thought to have been built around that time. The Yeojidoseo records that it lies 120 ri south of the county seat and is a stone-built fortress (seokseong) with a circumference of 1,470 cheok, a height of 8 ja, and two springs inside. The Munhwayujeok Chongnam (Comprehensive Survey of Cultural Heritage) describes it as a fortress site with a circumference of 2.5 km, stating that in 1648, the 26th year of King Injo, a manho was appointed and the fortress built, with a moat-like stretch of sea formed around it to keep out Japanese forces. Ijin also served as a checkpoint controlling travel to and from Jeju Island and as a point for transporting horses from the island, and it is said that four steles commemorating naval manho officers stand in the village. The fortress was built in an oval shape making use of the hills to the north and south; the sites of the east and west gates lie along what is now a village passage, and the site of the south gate survives within a private house. White porcelain fragments and various other artefacts have been found around the fortress, and the four manho steles now stand at the entrance to Ijin Elementary School. The exact date when Ijinseong Fortress was built is hard to determine, but it still retains almost its original form today, giving it considerable value. It also provides important material relating to the nearby Dalmasan beacon mound, the Dalto Seonso shipyard, and the private houses of Ijin village.
