A hyanggyo is a state-established educational institution where memorial rites were held for Confucius and various sages, and where local people were educated and morally cultivated. Geumsan Mountain Local Confucian School is presumed to have been built in the early Joseon period, and is said to have originally stood in Baekhak-dong, Hayok-ri, in what is now Geumsan-eup. It was later destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of Korea, and was rebuilt at its present site in 1684, the tenth year of King Sukjong's reign, undergoing several rounds of repair since then. Daeseongjeon Hall, the shrine where the memorial rites are held, measures three bays across the front and three bays deep, and the educational quarters comprise the Myeongnyundang lecture hall and the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories for students.
