Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis reservoir in Gonggeom-myeon, Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is presumed to have been built during the proto-Three Kingdoms period, and, together with Uirimji Reservoir in Jecheon (Chungcheongbuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage) and Byeokgolje Reservoir in Gimje (historic site), it is known as one of the three great reservoirs of the Joseon period. It is also called Gonggalmot; one theory holds that this name arose because a child was buried when the embankment was built. Since ancient times Gonggeomji has been so abundant with lotus flowers that, when they bloomed in full, it was said to rival Qiantang Lake in China, and this gave rise to the folk song 'Song of Gonggalmot', which spread widely. A record in the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam gives the embankment's length as 860 bo and the reservoir's circumference as 16,647 cheok, suggesting how grand its scale once was. Over the centuries it fell into ruin, leaving only traces, until expansion work in 1993 turned it into a pond 3.4 m deep.
