This is the joint tomb of Yi Hang, Prince Anyang (1480–1505), third son of King Seongjong, the ninth king of Joseon, and his wife of the Gu clan of Neungseong (1480–1556). After King Seongjong, Yeonsangun succeeded to the throne. When Yeonsangun learned that Royal Consort Jeong, Prince Anyang's mother and King Seongjong's concubine, had been involved in the deposition of his own birth mother, he launched the Gapja Sahwa, a purge in which those implicated were executed. As a result Prince Anyang was sent into exile and died the following year, in 1505. After King Jungjong came to the throne he held a funeral for Prince Anyang and had his tomb properly arranged. The life of Lady Gu of Neungseong is known from her surviving epitaph. Her father was Gu Su-yeong, a military official of the early Joseon period. She married Prince Anyang at the age of twelve, but after he was put to death by Yeonsangun their property was confiscated. Following the Jungjong Restoration, which placed King Jungjong on the throne, she was able to recover her rank and property. The tomb of Prince Anyang was originally located on Geojedo Island, his place of exile, but following a petition by Lady Gu it was moved to what is now the Namyangju area of Gyeonggi-do in 1520, the fifteenth year of King Jungjong. It was then relocated again to its present site in 1900, when Emperor Gojong created Hongneung Royal Tomb for Empress Myeongseong. The tomb of Prince Anyang is today surrounded by a grass-covered earthen embankment. At its centre stand an offering table, an incense-burner stone and a stone lantern, flanked on either side of the incense-burner stone by small attendant figures. On both sides stand a pair each of guide-pillar stones, civil official figures and stone sheep, giving the tomb the typical arrangement of stone furnishings found at the graves of the scholar-official class.
