Hoeandaegun Tomb
회안대군묘 · 懷安大君墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHoeandaegun Tomb is located on Beopsasan Mountain in Geumsang-dong, Jeonju. Unlike the usual form of Joseon-period tombs, the graves of husband and wife here are arranged vertically, as in the tomb of Jeong Geuk-in in Taein: the lower grave is that of the wife, and the upper grave is that of Prince Hoean, Yi Bang-gan. It is a well-known story that, because this burial site was regarded as "a place destined to produce a king", its flow of geomantic energy was cauterised, as though with moxibustion, to suppress it, and the cauterised spot is said to survive to this day. Prince Hoean was the fourth son of King Taejo, Yi Seong-gye, and was a figure of the early Joseon period who vied for supremacy with his younger brother Bang-won, later King Taejong. Having lost to Bang-won, Bang-gan spent the rest of his life in exile; unlike Bak Po, he escaped execution, but under King Taejong's unceasing surveillance he was never able to settle for long in one place and was repeatedly moved between places of exile. Yi Bang-gan was not only a central figure in the political history of the early Joseon period but is also of note in connection with the regional history of Jeonju. Jeonju, as the birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty, possesses distinctive historical and cultural traits and heritage.
