The Anyang Poem Stele Sandongdo Island Kiln Site was a place where celadon and white porcelain were produced during the Goryeo period. The kiln site sits on the right-hand slope at the foot of the ascent to Muneomi Pass, upstream on the Samseongcheon Stream, a tributary of the Anyangcheon Stream. Within a radius of about 40–50 metres, a wide range of incised and relief-decorated white porcelain, celadon and black-glazed stoneware have been unearthed, making it possible to trace the character of ceramic production around Gwanaksan Mountain during the Goryeo period. Much of the celadon recovered consists of everyday vessel types such as bowls and dishes, with smaller numbers of faceted dishes, jars and lids also found; some pieces bear incised, relief or inlaid designs. The white porcelain is of two kinds, soft-paste and hard-paste, occurring as bowls, dishes, lidded boxes and jars, occasionally decorated with inlay or incising. During firing, sand or fire-resistant clay was placed under the base of the vessels to keep them from sticking to the kiln floor or to one another. Besides the ceramic sherds, numerous kiln-furniture fragments and pieces of kiln wall relating to the firing process were also identified. The site is expected to help clarify how late-Goryeo white porcelain was made and how it developed into Joseon white porcelain; a full excavation would likely also reveal the relationship between the celadon and white porcelain produced there at the same time.
