Paldalsan Mountain Dolmen Group
팔달산지석묘군 · 八達山支石墓群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are a representative tomb type of the Bronze Age, generally understood to be the burials of a ruling class that held economic wealth or political power. They typically have a huge capstone exposed above ground, beneath which lie support stones, a burial precinct facility, and a burial chamber, though their form varies greatly depending on region and period. They are generally classified into the table type, in which the burial chamber sits above ground, and the go-board type, in which it lies underground. The Paldalsan Mountain Dolmen Group is located on the hills of Paldalsan Mountain to the left of Suwon Municipal Central Library, with four dolmens distributed across two locations. Dolmens No. 1 and No. 2 lie 3 m apart on the southern slope of Paldalsan Mountain at an elevation of 80 m, while Dolmens No. 3 and No. 4 lie 3 m apart at an elevation of 120 m, 50 m to the northwest. In most of the dolmens only some of the support stones are visible beneath the capstone exposed at ground level, making it difficult to determine their exact structure. The capstone of Dolmen No. 3, measuring 1.63 m long and 1 m wide, has shifted to one side and lies buried in soil; although the burial chamber is said to have been exposed, the wall stones forming the chamber have also been interpreted as support stones. Most of the capstones are made of granite. Judging from their present condition, the dolmens are likely to be of the go-board type, but excavation will be needed to establish their exact structure.
