Tumuli on Folding Screen Mountain, Sangju
상주 병풍산 고분군 · 尙州 屛風山 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are large stone-chamber tombs distributed across the hills on the north-western side of Folding Screen Mountain. They are presumed to have been built by Sabeolguk, an early state centred on the Sangju region, and they form the largest tomb cluster, both in extent and in scale, found anywhere in the Sangju area. On the summit of Folding Screen Mountain, where the tombs are located, stands Byeongpungsanseong, a fortress built by packing together earth and stone, which suggests the strength of the power that built the tombs. This power was most likely either the ruling group of Sabeolguk itself or a local elite of the Sangju region that emerged during the Three Kingdoms period. The tombs of Folding Screen Mountain provide important clues for understanding both the reality of Sabeolguk in the proto-Three Kingdoms period and the identity of the power that appeared afterwards.
