Choe Chi-won, a scholar of the late Silla period, stayed here at Hapo Bay and taught his disciples. His courtesy name was Haeun and his posthumous title was Munchang-hu. Choe Chi-won (857–?) lived here with his family before foreseeing the fall of Silla and withdrawing to Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon. After his death, Woryeongdae became a place of pilgrimage for writers and scholars of the Goryeo and Joseon periods who admired his learning and character. Woryeongdae is enclosed by a protective retaining wall, within which stands a memorial stele to Choe Chi-won. The stele pavilion built to shelter it measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that traces the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. To the east stands a yuheobi, a stele commemorating a site of historic significance, and to the north-east is a stone on which Choe Chi-won himself inscribed the words 'Woryeongdae' in haeseo, standard script.
