Seokseonghyanggyo Local Confucian School

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution founded by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local residents. The exact date of Seokseonghyanggyo's founding is unknown, but it is thought to have been built in the early Joseon period. It burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 and was rebuilt in 1623, the first year of King Injo, with further repairs made over the following centuries. The buildings follow the 'hall in front, shrine behind' layout, with Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, placed at the front and Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall, at the rear. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and sages of Korea. Other structures include Dongjae, once used as student dormitories, together with the inner and outer three-bay gates and a caretaker's quarters. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and slaves from the state to support the education of students, but its educational role ended after the Gabo Reform; today memorial rites are held each spring and autumn, with incense offered on the first and fifteenth day of every lunar month.
