Gochang Mandong Site
고창만동유적 · 高敞萬洞遺蹟

The Mandong Site was excavated by a buried heritage investigation institute from May to July 2002, within the section of the Gochang–Asan provincial road being widened and paved. The excavation identified 13 ditch-enclosed tombs (jugumyo) and four tombs without surrounding ditches, all built around the third to fifth centuries, a period spanning the Proto-Three Kingdoms period and the early historic era. A total of 189 artefacts were recovered, including earthenware such as double-rimmed jars and bowl-shaped vessels, various ironware such as ring-pommel swords, iron axes, spearheads and sickles, and ornaments such as glass beads and agate beads. The Gochang Mandong Site is an important site relating to Mahan burials of the Three Kingdoms period; the construction of the burial chambers, the form of the buried jar coffins, and the diversity of the excavated artefacts allow its relationship with the various small Mahan polities to be examined.
