전왕온의묘 · 傳王溫의墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Wang On (d. 1271), a member of the Goryeo royal family who held the princely title of Seunghwahu (Marquis of Seunghwa). In 1270, the eleventh year of King Wonjong, after the war between Goryeo and Yuan China had ended, the royal court that had taken refuge on Ganghwa prepared to return to the capital, Gaegyeong. Bae Jung-son, No Yeong-hui and other leaders of the Sambyeolcho — elite Goryeo troops who opposed submission to the Mongols — opposed this return and raised Wang On to the throne in their stead. However, in 1271, the twelfth year of King Wonjong, when the Sambyeolcho suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the combined Goryeo–Mongol forces, Wang On was killed by his own son Hwan and by Hong Da-gu, commander of the allied army. Wang On is recorded in the Okjuji, a gazetteer of Jindo Island compiled by Kim Yong-gyu, and according to the Jindo-gunji [Jindo County Gazetteer] his tomb is known as Wangbunchi. The tomb of Wang On takes the form of a long oval mound built up high with earth, with stones piled around its base to protect it.
