A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local people. It is not certain when Imcheonhyanggyo was built, but it appears to date from the early Joseon period. It originally stood in Gugyo-ri and was moved to its present site in 1688, the fourteenth year of King Sukjong. It has since been rebuilt and repaired several times down to the present. The buildings that survive today are the Daeseongjeon (main shrine hall), Myeongnyundang (lecture hall), and the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae). The Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and Korean sages. During the Joseon period, the state supplied land, slaves and books to support the education of students, but today the educational function has disappeared and only the memorial-rite function remains.
