Bongnimsa Temple Site, Changwon
창원 봉림사지 · 昌原 鳳林寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe site of Bongnimsa Temple lies in a pocket-shaped basin partway up Bongnimsan Mountain. It was built in 894, the seventh year of Queen Jinseong of Unified Silla, by Simhui (854–923), and flourished as one of the Nine Mountain Schools of Seon of the Unified Silla period, but no detailed record of its later history survives, and it is thought to have been destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. The scale and layout of the temple are not known in detail, but the site preserves traces of building foundations, a pond and a pagoda. It is also known that the stupa of State Preceptor Jingyeong, called the Bowol Neunggong Stupa (Treasure No. 362), and its memorial stele (Treasure No. 363), now within Gyeongbokgung Palace, as well as a three-storey stone pagoda now at Sangbuk Elementary School, were originally taken from this site.
