Gaya Tumuli in Sambong-ri, Jangsu
장수 삼봉리 가야고분군 · 長水 三峰里 伽倻古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gaya Tumuli in Sambong-ri form the burial ground of the ruling class of a Gaya polity, situated at the foot of Baekhwasan Mountain in Sambong-ri, Janggye-myeon, Jangsu county. Some twenty large tombs, each roughly 20–30 metres in diameter, are distributed across the site. Two seasons of excavation at the Sambong-ri tumuli recovered, from inside the burials, a wide range of Gaya pottery together with top-grade Gaya artefacts — iron horse gear, cramp irons, belt buckles and ring-pommel swords — indicating that those interred held very high status. The tombs were also found to follow a multi-chamber form, with a main chamber and an auxiliary chamber arranged within a single mound, both built as Gaya-style vertical stone-lined burial chambers. The Gaya Tumuli in Sambong-ri demonstrate the existence of a Gaya polity that developed on the basis of the eastern region of Jeonbuk State, and show that its power was in no way inferior to that of Gaya polities elsewhere, giving the site important historical and archaeological value.
