This is a seowon (Confucian academy) built to honour the loyalty of Bak Ik (1332–1398), a Goryeo civil official who settled in Cheongdo and became the founding ancestor of the Miryang Bak clan, and of the 14 uisa who distinguished themselves during the Japanese invasions, and to train younger scholars. Within the grounds stand Chungyeolsa, the shrine housing their spirit tablets, and the 14uisa Stele. Bak Ik held posts under Goryeo such as Vice Minister of Rites and Junior Chancellor, and distinguished himself several times in campaigns against Japanese pirates and Jurchen raiders. When Joseon was founded he declined office, withdrew to Dumundong, and lived out his remaining years there in seclusion. The 14 uisa were fourteen members of the Miryang Bak clan — fathers and sons, brothers and cousins among them — who raised righteous militia during the Japanese invasions and fought prominently in the Miryang, Cheongdo and Gyeongsan areas. Of these, eleven were each granted first-, second- or third-class merit as Righteous Subjects who Pacified the Military, and one was made a first-class meritorious subject during the Manchu invasion of 1636, a distinction of a kind found in no other family. The 14uisa Stele was erected in 1876, the 13th year of Emperor Gojong, and records in detail the circumstances of the Japanese invasions. The loyalty the Miryang Bak clan showed the state in a time of crisis stands as a model for later generations.
