A beacon station (bongsudae) was a means of communication used in the past to convey urgent news by torch fire and smoke: watchmen climbed high mountains and lit fires, signalling by smoke during the day and by firelight at night. According to the Daedong jiji, Geojedo Island had the Garasan beacon station, the Nammang beacon station at Gaebaeryang, the Ongnimsan beacon station at Okpo, the Nurin-got beacon station at Jisepo, and the Gaeul-got beacon station at Yulpo; of these, the Ongnimsan beacon station is thought to correspond to what is now known as the Ongnyeobong beacon station. The Ongnyeobong beacon station appears to have been established in the early Joseon period, its platform built up with a three-tiered stone foundation. It was sited at an ideal point from which the Gangmangsan beacon station could be seen to the north, the Jangseungpo area to the east, Aju and Okpo to the west, and Wahyeon in Iun-myeon to the south — all visible at a single glance — apparently so as to keep watch for Japanese pirates (waegu) invading from the south-east.
