Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local people. The exact date when Seocheon Confucian School was built is not known, but it is presumed to have been constructed during the early Joseon period, when many hyanggyo were established nationwide. There are records of several subsequent repairs, and it was extensively rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Gojong (r. 1863-1906). The layout of the buildings follows the jeonhak-humyo form, with Myeongnyundang, the space for learning, at the front, and Daeseongjeon, the ritual space, to the rear. On either side of Daeseongjeon stand Dongmu and Seomu, and on either side of Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, are Dongjae and Seojae, which served as student dormitories. Other buildings include the Hongsalmun (red-spiked gate), Naesammun (inner three-bay gate) and Oesammun (outer three-bay gate).
