A shell midden is a site formed from the shells and household refuse left behind by people who lived by hunting, fishing and gathering, piled up after they had eaten shellfish; such sites are also called shell mounds. The Sinan Gageodo Island Shell Midden lies on the slope west of the lighthouse at the northern tip of Gageodo Island. It was discovered in 1968 by an anthropology survey team from Seoul National University. When first investigated the site was thought to date from the late Neolithic period and to be closely related to Neolithic remains along the west coast, but more recent finds at the site of raised-pattern pottery and pressed-pattern pottery suggest that it may date back as far as the early Neolithic, and that it shares many features with Neolithic shell middens found along Korea's south coast. The Sinan Gageodo Island Shell Midden is valuable material for archaeological research, and for this reason it has been designated a monument and preserved.
