A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local people. The exact date of Hansanhyanggyo's founding is not known, but it is presumed to have been built at Yusan in Dongsan-ri during the reign of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo (r. 1274–1298). It was later moved to its present site in 1669, the tenth year of King Hyeonjong, and underwent major rebuilding from 1850, the first year of King Cheoljong, into the following year. The layout follows the "front-learning, rear-shrine" (jeonhak-humyo) arrangement, with Myeongnyundang, the space for learning, at the front and Daeseongjeon, the space for holding rites, at the rear. The Daeseongjeon measures three bays across the front and three bays along the side, with a gabled (matbae) roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 人 (person). Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, measures four bays across the front and two bays along the side, and windbreak boards (pungpan) are fitted to the sides of its gabled roof. Other buildings include the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae) used as student lodgings; these are usually built to the left and right of Myeongnyundang, but here, because the site is narrow and elongated, the dongjae stands to the right of Myeongnyundang while the seojae stands outside the surrounding wall.
