Dogang River Village School
도강서당 · 道岡書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seodang (village school) built by Jeongsan Kim Dong-jin (1867–1952), an independence activist of the late Korean Empire period and a leading Confucian scholar of this region, for the training of younger students. Kim Dong-jin was one of the foremost Confucian scholars of the Yeongnam region in the late Korean Empire period. During the Japanese colonial period he also took an active part in the independence movement and was imprisoned on several occasions, and he kept his topknot and hanbok to the very end. The exact date the school was built is not known. It measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side, and has no surrounding wall. The roof is a hip-and-gable roof, shaped like the character 八 when seen from the side. The central kan is floored, and the kan on either side are ondol-heated rooms, with a narrow wooden veranda running around all four sides. The upper structure has an exposed-rafter ceiling, in which the roof timbers are left visible.
