A hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local people. The exact date Jeongsanhyanggyo was founded is not certain, but records suggest it had already been established by the early Joseon period. Its teaching space includes Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, together with the east and west dormitories where students once lived, as well as a lecture pavilion and a ritual preparation hall; its ritual space comprises Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall where spirit tablets are enshrined. Inside Daeseongjeon are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and his disciples, together with those of Korea's own sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and slaves from the state and trained many students, but after the Gabo Reform its educational function ceased, and today rites are held in spring and autumn, with incense offered on the first and fifteenth day of each lunar month.
