김종무충신정려비 · 金宗武忠臣旌閭碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeongnyeobi is a stele erected at the entrance to a village to commemorate the conduct and spirit of a loyal subject, a filial child, or a virtuous woman. This stele honours the loyalty of Kim Jong-mu (1548-1592), who distinguished himself during the Japanese invasions of 1592. When the war broke out, Kim Jong-mu was serving as deputy postal-relay official of Sageundo. While retreating he placed himself under the command of Yi Il, the royal commissioner sent to Sangju. He later fought the Japanese forces alongside Sangju deputy magistrate Gwon Gil and died a heroic death at the Battle of Bukcheon in Sangju. In 1675, the first year of King Sukjong, he was posthumously honoured as a loyal subject; in 1790, the fourteenth year of King Jeongjo, he was granted the posthumous title of second counselor of the Board of Personnel, and in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, minister of the Board of Personnel. The stele is preserved inside a stele pavilion and bears the inscription "Grave stele of the loyal subject Kim Jong-mu." The wooden plaque above records Kim Jong-mu's achievements, the commendation granted from 1675 onward, the enshrinement of his spirit tablet at Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Sangju, and the posthumous honours he received after his death. The stele and its pavilion were first built in 1675, the first year of King Sukjong, and the pavilion was rebuilt in 1890, the thirty-third year of Emperor Gojong.
