Sacheon Village Guardian Shrine Fortress
사천성황당산성 · 泗川城隍堂山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress, in Jeongdong-myeon, Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, is also known as Goeupseong. The name derives from the fact that the seat of the old Sacheon county town was located at Goeup-ri, Jeongdong-myeon, near the fortress. The fortress is a temoe-sik (hilltop-encircling) mountain fortress built around the summit, and an earthen wall about 1,109 m in circumference and 3.5 m high survives today. However, on the steep southern slope a stone-built section of wall about 4 m long and 3 m high remains, suggesting that the fortress was originally built using a combination of earth and stone. According to records, the circumference of the stone wall was 1,941 cheok, and inside the fortress there were a well, an armoury, a seonghwangdan altar for enshrining the village guardian deity, and a beacon mound used for communication. The exact date of the fortress's construction is not known, but based on roof-tile and pottery fragments excavated nearby, it is presumed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period.
