Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaeyaseong Fortress encircles the summit of Maebongsan Mountain (90m above sea level) in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and was built using earth and stone. This area was the border zone between Baekje and Silla in the west during the Three Kingdoms period; it is said to have been built by Silla in the 25th year of King Jinheung (565) to defend against Baekje invasions. In the 11th year of Queen Seondeok (642), it fell to an attack by the Baekje general Yun Chung. When Kim Pum-seok, the Silla governor of Daeyaseong, and his wife (a daughter of Kim Chun-chu) died at that time, it was here that Kim Chun-chu resolved to destroy Baekje. The fortress also fell to Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje in the 4th year of King Gyeongmyeong (920). The fortress wall is about 300m long, but most of it has been damaged and no longer survives in its original form; however, traces remain in places of building sites and of a palisade erected to defend against attackers.
