Sin Ik-hui Birthplace
신익희생가 · 申翼熙生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is the birthplace of Sin Ik-hui (pen name Haegong, 1894-1956), a leading political figure of the period before and after liberation, who served as vice-speaker and then speaker of the National Assembly after independence. The house originally stood about 200 metres southeast of its present site, but after it was damaged in the great flood of 1865, it is said to have been moved to its current location around 1867. According to the building register, however, the house was built in 1925. The house consists of an inner quarters and an outer quarters, both tile-roofed timber-frame buildings that retain well the exterior appearance of a traditional hanok. The inner quarters forms an overall T-shape: around a central two-bay wooden-floored hall is the main bedroom to the right and a side room to the left, with a kitchen in front of the main bedroom. The outer quarters is L-shaped, with the main gate at its centre and a two-bay men's quarters to its left. Overall, the house takes the form typical of the dwellings of the minor landowning class of the Gyeonggi region in the nineteenth or early twentieth century. However, apart from some of the pillar members, the timbers throughout are slender and the joinery techniques are not of great age, suggesting that the house was substantially rebuilt sometime in the early twentieth century.
