Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a memorial gate (jeongnyeomun) erected in 1633, the 11th year of King Injo of Joseon, to honour the filial conduct of Kim Deok-sung, a filial son during the reign of King Sejong. It is a one-bay by one-bay wooden tiled-roof building with a gabled roof, its four sides enclosed with red lattice screens, and at the centre beneath the eaves hangs a memorial plaque composed by Im Heon-hoe (pen name Seoha) and written out by Jeon U. Inside the building, besides the plaque, stands a stele commemorating his filial piety. Kim Deok-sung gave up his post as magistrate of Hansan and returned to his hometown, devoting himself entirely to caring for his parents. When his father wished to eat carp, he is said to have sat by the Yeogyeso pool and melted the ice, whereupon a carp leapt out; when his father wished to eat pheasant meat, he would stand in the fields holding out his finger, and a pheasant would fly down and perch on it. These acts of devotion to his parents are recorded in the Samgang Haengsildo, an illustrated book of model conduct under the Three Bonds. When King Sejong stopped at the Chojeong mineral spring to treat an eye ailment, he heard of Kim's filial conduct and, through the governor of Chungcheong Province, bestowed ten sok of white rice and other gifts upon him. Kim then travelled to pay his respects to the king, who is said to have been unable to tell which of the two men, Kim or his father, was the father and which the son. When Kim passed away in 1448, the 30th year of King Sejong, the king posthumously conferred on him the post of Junior Third-rank Counsellor of the Ministry of Personnel and bestowed two poems of his own composition, ordering that a memorial gate be built.
