Dolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known mainly as the graves of a ruling class holding economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-type (takja-sik), in which four supporting stones are set upright to form a stone chamber topped with a huge flat capstone, and the go-board-type (badukpan-sik), in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones set beneath the capstone. Jeollanam-do has the largest concentration of dolmens in the country, with more than 20,000 known to date. In Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, some 2,250 dolmens have been confirmed at over 210 locations, among which the Bangchon-ri dolmens are the most representative. In a pine forest called 'Beoksu-gol' near the entrance to Naedong Village in Bangchon-ri, Gwansan-eup, 94 dolmens form an oval-shaped group running north to south. Although numerous, the dolmens themselves are not large in scale, and because most stand within the forest, they are relatively well preserved. Plain coarse pottery (mumuntogi) and stone arrowheads have been found in the surrounding area.
