This is the house where An Jae-hong (安在鴻, 1891–1965), pen name Minse, a leading journalist of the modern era, was born and lived. During the Japanese colonial period, An Jae-hong served as chief editorial writer of the Chosun Ilbo and led the Singanhoe society and the Movement to Promote Korean Products; he was both a nationalist patriot and a scholar at the forefront of research into ancient history and the spread of literacy. The house faces south at the foot of a low hill in Gyeru-ji village, Godeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek. It was originally of considerable scale, but today only the main hall (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the gate house remain. The L-shaped anchae and the straight-lined sarangchae form a U-shaped arrangement around the inner courtyard, with the gate house standing to the east of the sarangchae. According to the ridge-beam inscription, the anchae was built in 1914 and the sarangchae in 1932. The anchae is an eleven-kan thatched house (kan being the traditional unit of a structural bay). It is of value as an example that reflects the changes in early twentieth-century lifestyle, adapting the typical spatial structure of a Gyeonggi-do dwelling for efficient use of space while adding convenience, resulting in a varied floor plan. The sarangchae, for its part, displays the well-appointed features of an upper-class house, including a raised wooden floor pavilion (numaru) and double rafters.
