Bangdanjeokseogyugu in Sajiwon-ri, Danyang
단양 사지원리 방단적석유구 · 丹陽 斜只院里 方壇積石遺構

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a massive stone-piled structure located in the valley opposite Ondalsanseong Fortress, beside the road connecting Yeongchun-myeon in Danyang county with Yeongwol county in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It is also known as 'Taejotap' or 'Taejangi-myo', though it is better known by the latter name, which means 'the grave of the big general'. Judging from its stone-piling technique, which resembles that used in Silla mountain fortresses, the structure is thought to have been built around the 7th century. Its exact purpose is unknown: some believe it to be the tomb of General Ondal, while others regard it as a jeokseongchong, a stone-mound tomb, of a Goguryeo-period military commander. However, excavation uncovered no relics associated with General Ondal, and no burial-related facilities were confirmed. With no documentary records or clear artefacts relating to this stone structure, its precise nature remains difficult to determine.
