Earthen Fortification in Gyeonhak-ri, Chungju
충주 견학리 토성 · 忠州 見鶴里 土城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a small earthen fortification built at the tip of a hillock. The western rampart has been lost, but the rest survives intact. The overall circumference is estimated to have been just over 200 m, and the rampart appears to have stood roughly 5 m high. Artefacts recovered during excavation include a vessel with a wave pattern impressed on its neck, a flattened bottle (pyeonbyeong), and roof tiles bearing a herringbone pattern (eogolmun). Most of the excavated relics date to around the 9th century, suggesting the site is connected with local power-holders (hojok) of the late Unified Silla period, and investigation showed that the rampart had been built or repaired by panchuk, a rammed-earth technique, on two separate occasions.
