Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMangisanseong Fortress stands on Mangisan Mountain, 472m above sea level, at the boundary of Iljuk-myeon in Anseong, Icheon, and Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province. The site commands a key transport route linking south-eastern Gyeonggi Province with the northern Chungcheong region. The Baekje-period wall is an earthen rampart encircling the summit, about 250m in circumference. It was confirmed to have been built by the pandchuk (rammed-earth) method using fixed timber corner posts (yeongjeongju). Large quantities of earthenware and iron weapons have been excavated inside it, and it appears to have been in use during the 4th and 5th centuries, the Hanseong Baekje period. The Unified Silla wall encircles the Baekje earthen rampart and runs along the ridge line as a pogok-sik, or valley-enclosing, mountain fortress. With a total circumference of 2,080m it is a large fortress with a rectangular plan, in which four gate sites, five chi (projecting bastions) and numerous building sites have been identified. The wall was built of granite blocks precisely cut into rectangular shapes, laid on large foundation stones and stepped inward to give a gentle batter; it is a pyeonchuk-sik wall, faced with stone on the outer side only. An octagonal building site and a rectangular building site were found within the fortress, and the building sites yielded numerous inscribed roof tiles, showing that Mangisanseong was intensively used in the early Goryeo period. Mangisanseong is a composite military site where defensive works from several periods overlap. It is especially valuable for tracing the spread of Baekje rammed-earth wall-building techniques, and its dressed granite, foundation stones and the pyeonchuk-sik method introduced under Unified Silla make it a highly significant site in the history of Korean fortress construction.
