This is the head house of the Gaeamgong branch of the Uiseong Kim clan. Haejeo village is a representative single-clan village of the Yeongnam region; the Uiseong Kim clan produced many successful candidates in the state civil service examination during the reign of King Jeongjo (r. 1776–1800), and by playing a leading role in the political and social activities of the Yeongnam literati of that period, the clan established itself as one of the region's leading families. Kim Chang-u played a leading part in the anti-Japanese independence movement known as the First and Second Yurimdan Incidents, for which he received the Order of Merit for National Foundation, and the fact that this independence movement was mainly discussed and organised around this head house gives the site particular significance.
