A beacon station (bongsudae) was a traditional means of communication that used torches and smoke to relay urgent news quickly. Signal fires were lit on high mountains, sending signals by smoke during the day and by firelight at night. The Jwaisan Mountain beacon station was built for military purposes and sits atop a 392 m peak about 30 km from Goseong-eup. The station originally had a circumference of about 73 m; today 36 m of its stone wall survives, standing 1.6–2.2 m high. Established in the early Joseon period, it received signals relayed from the Usan beacon station and passed them on to the Gaksan beacon station in Sacheon, the Saryangjin beacon station, and the Soeulbipo garrison.
