A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally instruct local people. Taeanhyanggyo was first built in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong of Joseon, and was later relocated to the site now occupied by Taean Middle School. The buildings that survive today were rebuilt on the present site in 1720, the 46th year of King Sukjong, after the earlier buildings had been lost to fire. Surviving buildings include the Daeseongjeon, the shrine for the memorial rites, together with the Dongmu and Seomu auxiliary shrine halls, the Myeongnyundang lecture hall, the east and west dormitories where students lodged, and the inner and outer three-bay gates. Inside the Daeseongjeon are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to teach students, but today its educational function has ceased and only the memorial rites continue.
