Hyanggyo were educational institutions established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct local residents. Dangjin Local Confucian School is said to have been built either in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo of Joseon, or in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong. The buildings that survive today include the Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall for rites; the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall for education; the Dongjae and Seojae, the students' dormitories; a three-bay gate; and a hall for storing ritual vessels. Inside the Daeseongjeon are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period, the state provided land, slaves and books to support the students' education, but today the school's educational function has ceased and only its memorial rites continue.
