This is the grave of Jeong Ho (1648–1736), posthumously honoured as Mungyeong-gong, whose pen name was Jangam. Jeong Ho was a civil official and scholar of the mid-Joseon period; his courtesy name was Jungsun, his pen name Jangam, and his clan seat Yeonil. He was a descendant of Jeong Cheol, who had served as Left State Councillor. A disciple of Song Si-yeol, he passed the saengwon licentiate examination in 1682, the eighth year of King Sukjong, and in 1684 passed the jeongsi-mungwa special palace examination, going on to serve as court annalist (gyeomnyeol) and censor (jeongeon). However, when Queen Inhyeon was deposed and Song Si-yeol was forced by royal order to take his own life in the Gisa hwanguk affair of 1689, Jeong Ho was dismissed from office, expelled from the capital, and exiled to Gyeongseong. (Source: Encyclopaedia of Korean Culture, entry 'Jeong Ho') He was reinstated when the Westerners faction (Seoin) returned to power after the Gapsul purge of 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, and despite repeated rises and falls amid factional strife he eventually rose to the position of Chief State Councillor. He was enshrined at Nuam Seowon, a Confucian academy in Chungju, and his bujomyo — a shrine exempted from the usual rule of removing the ancestral tablet after four generations — stands in Changdong, Gageum-myeon, Chungju. In front of the burial mound stand an offering table, a gravestone, and a pair of ornamental pillars (mangjuseok), though the grave as a whole is not large in scale.
