Hyanggyo were educational institutions established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct local residents. The exact date of Myeoncheonhyanggyo's founding is not known, but it is said to have been built in 1392, the first year of King Taejo. The building layout follows the teaching-in-front, shrine-behind form: at the front, a teaching area consisting of the Myeongnyundang lecture hall and the Dongjae and Seojae student dormitories; and behind, a ritual area consisting of the Daeseongjeon and the Dongmu and Seomu. Inside the Daeseongjeon are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. The Dongmu and Seomu flanking the Daeseongjeon are identical in scale and form, each measuring three bays across the front and one bay deep. Their roofs are built in the gable (matbae) style, which in cross-section resembles the shape of the character 人 (person). Other surviving buildings include the inner and outer three-bay gates. Memorial rites are held here every year in the second and eighth lunar months.
