Gongju Jung-dong Cathedral
공주중동성당 · 公州中洞聖堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krStanding on a hill, this Catholic cathedral is built in the Gothic style that was popular in medieval Europe. Its floor plan is a slightly modified Latin cross, and its exterior is of red brick. A tall bell tower rises above the central entrance, and the tops of the entrance doorway and windows are decorated with pointed arches. Inside, long pews seating many people are placed in the centre, with aisles running along either side. Between the central nave and the aisles stand six stone pillars with a hexagonal cross-section. Construction began in 1934 and was completed in 1936, and the building offers a glimpse of the transition from traditional wooden architecture to modern construction.
