This mountain fortress was built along the ridge of Mount Goseongsan in Bukbang-ri, Okjong-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is not known when the fortress was first built, but it is said to have still stood as late as the 1770s. Along the ridges of Mount Goseongsan rock cliffs occur in many places, and traces remain of a wall built by linking these natural rock faces together. Near the summit in particular, stones remain that are shaped like a chair and a table, apparently where commanders once held councils of war. This is the site famous for the battle in which some 5,000 peasant troops from western Gyeongsangnam-do, who had risen up against Japanese interference in Joseon's internal affairs, fought the Japanese army in the 31st year of King Gojong's reign (1894). According to Japanese military reports of the time alone, 186 Donghak peasant soldiers were killed in action and several dozen more were wounded. Figures from this area organised the Goseongsanseong Anti-Japanese Battle Site Preservation Association, which erected a memorial tower to the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1995.
