Gocheonseowon honours the righteous militia of the Yeongcheon area who rose up during the Imjin War of 1592 (the 25th year of King Seonjo), fighting with distinction at the Battles of Jain and Yeongcheon Fortress, and who died for their country after taking part in the Battle of Gyeongju Fortress. All those enshrined here were men of middling official rank or local scholars from the Yeongcheon area who led farmers from the surrounding region in the effort to repel the Japanese forces, but all were lost to the cause together. The shrine hall was built in 1705 (the 31st year of King Sukjong), and the lecture hall in 1797 (the 21st year of King Jeongjo). The academy was later demolished by order of the Regent, but in 1916 the local Confucian community restored the enshrinement of the Ten Loyal Worthies, and rites continue to be held there every year.
