Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSacheon Walled Town, located around Seonin-ri, Sacheon-eup, Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, is a fortress built of stone and earth; of its roughly 1.5km perimeter, about 300m survives today across three sections. According to the Sacheon-gunji (Gazetteer of Sacheon County), the area was called Dongseong during the reign of King Taejong of Joseon, when a garrison was stationed there and its military commander concurrently held the post of magistrate; during the reign of King Sejong it was again called Sacheon-hyeon'gam. The fortress is said to have been built in 1442, the 24th year of King Sejong, by Sin In-son, Vice Minister of War, on royal command; four years later, government offices were built and the town was relocated here. The earliest records give the wall's perimeter as 3,105 cheok and its height as 10.5–11.5 cheok, with three gates and three ongseong, or barbican enclosures; later records give the perimeter as 5,015 cheok and the height as 15 cheok, still with three gates and three ongseong, showing that the fortress was enlarged at some later date. It is said to have originally been built to protect the people and defend against Japanese pirates, and it suffered greatly during the Japanese invasions of Korea. In particular, in 1598, the 32nd year of King Seonjo, Joseon forces under General Jeong Gi-ryong joined with Ming reinforcements in a fierce battle to retake the fortress, eventually driving out the Japanese invaders. Today, Sanseong Park has been developed within the fortress, containing the Chunghontap monument to the war dead, Suyangnu Pavilion and Gwandeokjeong, an archery pavilion, making it a popular resting place for local residents.
