Dangjin Lidded Box Deok Cathedral
당진합덕성당 · 唐津合德聖堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDangjin Lidded Box Deok Cathedral stands on a low hill, built of brick and timber in an architectural style rarely seen in Korea. A distinctive feature is the pair of bell towers at the façade; the cathedral's three entrances and all of its windows are arched. The exterior walls are of red brick, while the window surrounds and the corners of the bell towers are built in grey brick. Diamond-shaped ornaments in grey brick decorate the area beneath the windows and each face of the bell towers. Rebuilt in 1929, the building carries a history of more than a hundred years, and in times when the Church was persecuted it served as a site of martyrdom, playing the role of a birthplace of the Catholic Church in Korea.
