Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeongju Okseongniuiyeolgak Pavilion is a memorial pavilion built to honour the loyalty and integrity of Yi Gyeong-hwan (李慶煥, 1902–1929), a patriot who took his own life in resistance to Japanese rule, and his wife, Lady Bae of Seongsan, who took her own life following her husband. In 1928 Yi Gyeong-hwan travelled to Japan intending to submit a direct petition to Emperor Hirohito (裕仁) during his visit to Kyoto, protesting the injustice of Japan's invasion of Korea and demanding the abolition of the Japanese Governor-General's Office in Korea. He was imprisoned before he could deliver the petition, and after enduring great hardship in prison he returned home. In November 1929, lamenting that he could no longer live in a country taken from his people, he hanged himself; his wife, Lady Bae of Seongsan, is said to have taken her own life three days after her husband's death. Yi Gyeong-hwan was posthumously awarded a Presidential Citation in 1968 and the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriots' Medal, in 1991.
