Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of the birthplace of General Choe Yun-deok (1376–1445), a military official of the early Joseon period, on the hill behind Songchon Village in Buk-myeon. The general passed the military examination during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon and entered government service. In 1419, the first year of King Sejong, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Three Armies and, together with Yi Jong-mu, led the expedition against Tsushima Island; he later served as Minister of Works and as Military Commissioner of Pyeongan Province. While serving in that post, he repelled incursions by neighbouring peoples and was specially promoted to Right State Councillor. In 1435, the seventeenth year of King Sejong, he rose to Left State Councillor, and is said to have been particularly benevolent and frugal by nature. Local residents call this site Jeongseung-gol (Valley of the State Councillor), and it is now cultivated with terraced rice paddies and orchards. However, traces of stone retaining walls thought to be house foundations, together with the remains of a well, are found there, and fragments of roof tile and pottery have been unearthed, leading to its identification as the general's birthplace.
