Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Yeoncheon Samgonnidolmuji Site Tomb is a communal burial ground from the late Proto-Three Kingdoms period, and is significant as the first stone-mound tomb to be excavated in the Imjingang River basin. Unlike the stone-mound tombs of Goguryeo, the stone layer covering its mound is not thick, so it has been called by various names such as jeupseongmyo, jeupseokchong and jeupseokssik jeokseongmyo ("stone-covered mound tomb"), though in recent scholarship it is also referred to as a jeokseok bungumyo, a stone-mound tomb with an earthen mound. The tomb sits on a sand dune on the north bank, at the point where the Imjingang River, after flowing south, bends back to the north. The dune runs in a long east-west line, and the overall shape of the stone mound is close to an oval. It was built by levelling a natural sand dune on the riverbank and constructing a stone burial chamber on top using river cobbles. Grave goods recovered from the tomb include a necklace made of small beads of glass, amber and agate, together with an iron arrowhead and a bronze ring; the tomb is thought to date from around the third century. Tombs of this type are found not only in the Imjingang River basin but also, as local centres, along the tributaries of the Bukhangang and Namhangang Rivers. They have long been understood as tombs connected either with Goguryeo migrants or with local Baekje powers, but recent research has also put forward the view that they belonged to groups of the Ye cultural sphere distributed across northern Gyeonggi-do and the Yeongseo region.
