A beacon station (bongsudae) was a traditional means of communication used to relay urgent news by fire and smoke: signal fires were lit atop high mountains, using smoke by day and firelight by night. Garasan Beacon Station, Geoje, stands at the summit of Garasan Mountain, on the boundary between Dongbu-myeon and Nambu-myeon, and is said to have been linked to the west with the Hanbaegot Beacon Station and to the north with the Gyeryongsan Mountain Beacon Station. The site of the beacon station forms an overall square shape, and the surrounding stone wall remains in good condition. Below the beacon station are traces of what was once a stairway, and further below that are the remains of a building associated with the station.
